Crossword Adventure for Kids
AppyChat & Giveaway
Developer: Rob Ellis
When did you decide to develop this app?
A few years ago IOS development became an interest of mine so I began studying it as a hobby. No real goals, just fiddling around with the programming for fun. About a year ago my wife came up with the idea of the game and that is what got the ball rolling to actually start working towards making an app. At that point we began working as a team. She focused on finding the artwork and I focused on the programming.
When did you first release this app?
Crossword Adventure for Kids was first released in December 2012.
How long did it take you to develop this app?
About 6 months.
What is your favorite feature?
Word Adventure, which allows the user to make the game more challenging for older kids. Originally we only had the 2-3 year olds in mind, but quickly figured out the game could be fun and educational for older kids too.
What skills were you hoping to help the end user to develop?
The main goal was learning the alphabet and spelling. This app was created with our (then 2 year old) son in mind who was learning the alphabet. He was very interested in identifying letters, so we came up with a game where he could do just that. Every time a letter is pressed in the game, it is read aloud. The pictures encouraged him to complete the puzzles and also encouraged him to talk more as he would begin to repeat the names of each picture. Word adventure was added later in the development process to aid in spelling skills for older kids.
What age range would this app most suit?
Kids age 2-7
Are any new updates coming soon?
Nothing currently scheduled, but do watch for updates adding new puzzles to the game periodically.
A fun way for kids to work on letter recognition, learning new words and spelling. Loaded with pictures, this entertaining game is an exciting, educational app!
The game offers a variety of puzzles, including nature, farm animals, numbers, colors, and more! Toddlers & Preschoolers will enjoy doing their very own crossword puzzles by matching letters and unlocking the corresponding pictures. Older kids can turn on “Word Adventure” in the settings so that only a few letters will be shown on the puzzles. From there they use the pictures as clues to build on spelling skills.
Additional settings allow color choices for tiles and the option to have puzzles display upper or lowercase letters. Sound options allow the vocalization of letters and picture words as an additional learning aid.
