Children’s Technology Review awarded Mathtopia+ its 2013 Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Design
When did you decide to develop this app?
In August of 2012. Our son was supposed to be learning math facts in school, but preferred to wiggle in his chair, stare at the ceiling, and fetch a glass of water over practicing his facts.
When did you first release this app?
How long did it take you to develop this app?
About 2 months
What is your favourite feature?
The star system that allows me to see at a glance how my son is progressing towards math fluency.
What is your son’s favorite feature?
The exploding stars, multi-touch swap, and the achievements he receives as his skills improve.
What skills were you hoping to help the end user to develop?
Math fact fluency (the ability to automatically recall facts in less than two seconds) along with pattern recognition, pattern matching, and logic skills.
What age range would this app most suit?
All ages. We’ve had children as young as five beg for time with it. Second to fifth graders are typically developing and mastering math fact fluency. And if you look on the Game Center leader boards, adults find the game highly compelling and addicting! The Smart Apps for Kids reviewer captured our experience nicely: “Mathtopia+ wins an award in my house—the first app I’ve reviewed that has been so addicting to me I couldn’t stop playing long enough to write the review. It’s also being played by all three of my children, in 6th grade, 3rd grade, and kindergarten, and I’ve even heard them fighting over the iPad for more Mathtopia+ time. I can guarantee no one in my house has ever fought over more time with flash cards.”
Are any new updates coming soon?
We update Mathtopia regularly, adding new achievements, new reporting features, and other elements at our users’ request. We love hearing from our users.
What sets you apart from other developers?
In addition to our credentials as programmers and educators, our team has a former State Senator, a former defense attorney for Napster, and a gamefication junkie.
Award winning highly addictive and entertaining math facts game.
