As a certified teacher and now parent of a preschooler, I am well aware that children can learn through songs. Many are familiar with the songs that make time tables fun, so why not have one for addition facts too? I have been trying to find a way to work on addition songs, and here is a very cute app from Cambridge English Online Ltd called Maths Songs: Addition HD. This developer has also created many math games including the Math Martians series and the Math Songs: Times Tables series as well.
My preschooler likes to sing all the time, even during her quiet time. So I figured let’s see how she enjoys this app. There are two parts to the Maths Songs: Addition HD the song and the game. There are 6 songs, incorporating +1, +2, +3, +5, +10, as well as doubling. Each song is cute and fun to sing along with. Another neat feature of the app is it teaches the commutative property of addition. This means that one can add numbers together in any order and the sum is still the same. So, for example, 3+1=4 and 1+3=4. They also do an excellent job during this part to use red & blue dots as counters to show how the answers remain the same for those who are visual learners.
In the Game section, the learner listens to each game song and chooses the correct sums on the board. If the learner gets the answer wrong, it just says “try again!” The help screen is great, if the learner forgets the addition sums during the game. There is a timer going to see how quickly you can figure out all the sums, but there is no time limit. Cambridge English Online Ltd also added a bonus page of teaching tips which has some great suggestions. Maths Songs: Addition HD is a fun app to help children learn addition facts with +1, +2, +3, +5, +10, and doubles. It’s a great start to motivating children to further learn about math.
