Speech4Good

Review, Appy Chat & Giveaway

Developer: Balbus Speech

Review:

(by Amy from Special Apps, Special Kids)

This is a wonderful app to have in your Speech Therapy tool kit. While it is meant to be used for fluency issues such as stuttering, I have also found it helpful to use with some students struggling with articulation. The DAF (Delayed Auditory Feedback) seems to allow them to process how their words sound, and allow them to make corrections. The spectrogram also provides a visual of how each word should look like. I have taken screenshots of a word spoken by myself for my students to use as a comparison for their own speech productions. Sessions can be recorded and revisited, or shared via email. Speech4Good has recently been updated with a brand new interface. All the tools are now more easily accessible from one screen.

When did you decide to develop this app?
I decided to develop Speech4Good when undergoing speech therapy myself for a stutter back in 2009–I knew I wanted to include both visual and auditory feedback–but also have a place to take notes like a journal for my speech practice. I decided we needed a complete update of the app, which is now this new 2.0 version, about a year later–the mobile technology space moves so quickly that it’s important to continually refresh and update your app, so we spent almost two months re-designing Speech4Good for our users.
When did you first release this app?
Speech4Good first launched in October of 2011
How long did it take you to developer this app?
It took about 5 months in total to develop Speech4Good, and another 2 months to create this brand new “2.0” update. We spent a lot of time re-designing the interface and making it more powerful, faster but also easier to use.
What is your favourite feature?
My favorite feature is the Speech Graph–it’s a real time representation of your voice on a spectogram or oscilloscope–it gives clear indications of how I’m speaking and helps me focus in on changes in my voicing.
What is your favourite page in the app?
We just added a really slick new navigation slider to the app–essentially, when you want to navigate to a new page, you will see a page slide out with options of other pages, and it slides back in when you’re done–it’s a really convenient way to save time and space within the app, instead of three clicks it only takes one.
What skills were you hoping to help the end user to develop?iPhone Screenshot 2
Speech4Good is especially designed for communication/speaking skills–mostly fluency and articulation, but really anyone who needs visual or auditory feedback on their voice.
What age range would this app most suit?
There really is no “age range” for Speech4Good–it’s a set of tools that allow speakers and speech-language pathologists to monitor speech.
Are any new updates coming soon?
We will continue to update Speech4Good every couple months–primarily based on feedback from our users. If you users want something added (or removed!), we do our best to improve Speech4Good based on this feedback–we are always interested in chatting with or receiving emails from our users! Also, it’s important that we update the app whenever a new Apple iOS release comes out in order to ensure maximum functionality with the latest Apple software.
